A bit about us – A family business, formed by a mother of two in 1983

What a journey she has made! Roma Arthur was a mother of two young boys when she founded Business Communications in 1983. The company was first born from an annex in her back garden in Hampshire (UK), where she was able to balance motherhood and starting a new business.

At that time, BT (British Telecoms) was enjoying a long reign of monopoly on all customer sales and hire of telephone products in the UK market. This is until the Government privatised the company in 1984 and consequently, paving the way for increased competition in the telecommunications industry. Also, this meant that end users could buy telephone system equipment through various supply channels.

Roma quickly realised the potential of this new opportunity and since there were many telephone products emerging in the UK market, mainly coming from Japan (Panasonic) and Germany (DeTeWe), this speared Business Communications into becoming a telephone communications equipment reseller.

Panasonic at that time (and still today) was the most popular brand in the market for small to medium sized business telephone solutions which suited Business Communications and as such they became an authorised reseller, which they still are today.

In addition, Two-Way Radio manufacturers  were then mainly selling communications products directly to the end users, however the market was slowly coming to appreciate the use of dealer networks which were seen to be more cost effective. Business Communications at that time were looking at the various two-way radio communications products in the market.  Motorola was regarded as the best in terms of quality and service (and still are). Consequently, Business Communications were delighted to be appointed as a Motorola dealer in 1988, and still are to this day.

Today the company is still a family run business despite going Limited last year in March; and 31 years on, the company is still thriving and specialising in all areas of telecoms services to include:

Business Communications also offer bespoke solutions, for example as an authorised Motorola dealer with in-house system designers, the team can provide fully designed and installed on-site radio systems with base station repeaters and distributed antenna networks, complete with PABX telephone system interfaces.

With a UK based team working from offices in Farnborough and Greater London, Business Communications offers nationwide services to companies from various industries and sizes.  In addition to local areas such as Fleet, Basingstoke, Bracknell, Reading, Southampton, Slough, Windsor, Berkshire, Hampshire, Kent, Surrey, Sussex and London, it also deals with businesses with subsidiaries and operations in Europe and the Middle East.

After 31+ years of complete dedication to the running of the business, Roma is planning to retire at the end of this year to take time to enjoy the fruits of her labour.  However, Roma will still keep an eye on the company’s progress but the management of it will continue in the hands of her husband and sons.

This is a true celebration to Roma, motherhood, entrepreneurship and women in business!
